The construction of the Topkapi Palace began in 1459 AD by order of the Ottoman Sultan Muhammad Khan II, the Conqueror of Constantinople. The palace began to lose its importance gradually after the seventeenth century, and the Ottoman sultans preferred to stay in the new palaces, and in 1856 AD, Sultan Abdul Majid I ordered the construction of Dolmabahce Palace, the first palace built on the European architectural style and moved to it with the survival of some departments in the Topkapi Palace such as Treasury and Library.

After the fall of the Ottoman Empire in 1923, the Turkish government turned the palace into a museum on April 3, 1924, and the management of the palace was transferred to the Turkish Ministry of Culture and Tourism. The palace complex contains hundreds of rooms, and is guarded by ministry officials as well as guards from the Turkish army. The palace contains many examples of Ottoman architecture.
